Emigration from Eritrea has become a mass phenomenon. The route leads through Ethiopia or Sudan and often to Europe or North America. In his book Magnus Treiber describes emigration as a learning process in which the migrants adopt both legal and illegal strategies. Hundreds of thousands have left Eritrea since the suppression of the democracy movement in 2001 and embarked on a long journey into the unknown. Migrants often feel compelled to avoid formalities, because residence permits or entry visas are not easily issued. The book explains which legal and illegal strategies migrants use on their way. The hope for a better life elsewhere thus leads to a special culture of migration, which is characterized by extreme stress, feelings of uncertainty and social tension.
