Volume 1 includes an annoted version of Weinreich's »Outlines of Yiddish Dialectology«, a formulation of some of the linguistic problems underlying the investigations as a whole, accompanied by a set of 80 composite maps which illustrate phonological variation in the Yiddish of Central and Eastern Europe before World War II.
