Since the early days of civilization borates have been among the most interesting compounds. Even today the minerals are most valuable for the production of ceramics high-performance glasses, whereas synthetic borates became essential in the laser technology. The work presents the excellent optical and physical properties of borates and discuss the broad field of technical applications.
